Lex visits Jack in the cage. His trial is due to start.
Ryan finds himself as judge as goes to find a silly hat!

Lex now has a vested interest in getting Jack off the charge of hoarding
food. For Jack knows about Lex's own water stash, and he has promised
that if he goes down, he'll reveal Lex's water rip-off. This is blackmail
but Jack has nothing to lose, so Lex had better clear Jack's name.

Amber gives evidence first. Jack sticks to his defense: he isn't a thief,
the food was his in the first place. Amber calls him as good as a thief,
on the grounds that they all needed it and this need took precedence over
the technicality of whose it was originally. They need to stamp out the
serve-yourself attitude now, or they'll end up like the Locusts. She's sorry,
but there has to be a penalty, to serve as an example to others, but she
reminds the court too, that Jack is intelligent, and they need people like
him in the Tribe.
Lex questions Jack, whose defense changes a little:
| Lex:
Do you deny hoarding the food? |
| Jack:
No |
| Ryan: There you are |
| Lex:
Why d'you do it then? |
| Jack:
I wanted to keep it to make it last longer |
| Zandra: Oh come on! |
| Lex:
Let him talk.....what else? |
| Jack: I
know that if I'd told everyone, it would all go in a couple of days.
The only reason we ration our food is because we don't think we have
very much |
| Amber: Why are you
only telling us this now? |
| Lex: You
didn't like it when he interrupted you.....so don't interrupt him.....go
on Jack |
| Jack:
The other thing I thought was that if the fighting stopped, we could
trade with the other tribes, so I wanted us to keep something to trade
with |
| Bray: [Laughs] |
| Lex: Do
you think this is funny? |
| Bray: I think it's
a good story |
| Lex: I
can tell you there are people out there who want to trade;
the tribes are making peace |
| Amber: How do you know? |
| Lex: I
keep my ear to the ground |
| Bray: I haven't heard
anything about a truce |
| Lex: You've
been too busy playing daddy, but it's a fact |
| Amber: Tell me something:
why do you want to get Jack off so badly? |
| Lex: I'm
interested in the truth, that's all. And here's another thing: if
we find Jack guilty and punish him, it's only fair to look at all
the other crimes, like people gambling for rations, and all the other
people who knew about the stash and kept quiet. Right: all those who
think Jack is guilty put up their hands |

The Jury's verdict - innocent!
Bray, Amber, Zandra and
Dal vote guilty. Those who vote Not guilty: Paul,
Patsy, Ryan, Lex and eventually Cloe,
under pressure from Paul, Patsy
and Lex . Salene
abstains.
Right then, 5 to 4 Jack's innocent, pronounces Lex
- a controversial decision judging by the chitchat afterwards. |
